We have just completed the first edition of the STEM Education Programme for young people from foster care facilities. From April to the end of June 2024, young people took part in workshops on creativity, robotics and IoT [Internet of Things].<\/strong><\/p>\n

STEM education for children is the future<\/h2>\n

The project, which was developed with the support of Cellnex, counteracts educational exclusion and promotes a better understanding of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The STEM subjects are systematically neglected and \u00a0more and more pupils show difficulties with these subjects at school. Meanwhile, STEM skills are highly valued in the labour market. That is why we have proudly and hopefully implemented a project that provides children with knowledge and inspires them to develop in directions that are not obvious to them.<\/p>\n

Let’s get to know each other. Building a team<\/h2>\n

At the beginning of the project, the participants designed their own coats of arms to introduce themselves to the rest of the group and to get to know each other better. When designing their coats of arms, they reflected on what they like to do, what is most important to them and how they relate to the world and to others. The interpersonal training methods were proposed by Szymon Szczepocki, a computer science and physics teacher, who led the workshops. Szymon has been acquiring skills as a trainer in STEM education for years, first as a student of pedagogy at the University of Lodz, and then through postgraduate studies in computer science, physics, art therapy, oligophrenopedagogy and early intervention and development of children with autism.<\/p>\n

Robotics workshops and more<\/h2>\n

At the end of the project, children from facility in Zambr\u00f3w conducted robotics workshops at school for their classmates. They took on the role of leaders, which gave them not only satisfaction but also a sense of empowerment. And although a STEM trainer was present during the classes (as backup support), the responsibility of the leaders rested with the children themselves.<\/p>\n

In general, throughout the entire quarter of the workshops, the participants often worked in groups, thanks to which they acquired additional social competences. Confronting ideas with each other, reaching consensus, sometimes asserting oneself firmly and sometimes compromising for the good of the group \u2013 these are skills that many adults lack. Thanks to the project in cooperation with Cellnex, the foundation’s prot\u00e9g\u00e9s can now add this experience to their CVs.<\/p>\n
